The perception that poodles are vain and snobby seems to be ingrained into the psyche of many people. For example, Marty Becker DVM and Gina Spadafori in their informative question and answer book, “Why do dogs drink out of the toilet?”, devote a whole chapter to just this very issue. In “QUIT PICKING ON POODLES”, Ms. Spadafori states that poodles have been “long maligned as an effeminate dandy, and the butt of jokes for generations,” all because of the fancy haircuts people have given them.

In the spring of 1992, Grandma and Grandpa were recovering from the loss of their dog Amy, a tan lab. Amy had died several months earlier of cancer, and they weren’t intending to get another dog. Grandma thought it would be too much work for people their age. My daughter and I thought that having another dog would help them through their loss.
Grandma and Grandpa had never been without a dog and there had been many through the years. There was Rusty, a large shepherd -like dog who used to jump through screen doors in a thunderstorm; feisty Skampy, an Airedale; Roger and Penny, both Airedales who produced six litters of puppies; Freddie and Natasha, both strays who just wandered into the yard;
